How to Throw a Roaring 1920s Wedding

If you've seen the 2013 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby, you know two things: one, Leo DiCaprio improves with age and two, Mr Gatsby also knew how to throw a great party! That could be the reason why so many couples are now having Gatsby-themed weddings. The 1920s were a time of optimism. People had a free-spirited attitude. And, even though it was prohibited, they found more than enough ways to party and drink. Let's be honest, these are the main factors which people enjoy about a good wedding.

So this article is for all those soon-to-be brides and grooms who want their wedding to look and feel like a lavish '20s bash. So let's take a look at the things you need to consider when planning your big day in a roaring 20’s manor.

Selecting a Wedding Venue with an Art Deco Feel

The location of your vows and first dance will make (or break) your Gatsby theme. After all, Mr Gatsby threw extravagant parties, so a barn or a beach setting isn't the best option. Choose a venue that was around in the 1920s to pull off your wild reception. As a result, the building will have some distinct Art Deco architectural elements.

Highfield was built in 1864 as a celebration and statement of success. The Highfield House is a Victorian/mock Elizabethan merchant's house with lots of character, ideal for a vintage wedding. Our reception hall is ideal for brides and grooms who want a Downton Abbey-style wedding, and our Library Bar would be ideal for a Great Gatsby-themed wedding.

Get the Glamorous 1920’s Look

There's a thin line between wearing vintage garments and looking like you're dressed in a period piece fancy dress costume.

Rather than purchasing a vintage wedding gown, look for a new gown with vintage-inspired embellishments. Many modern bridal designers incorporate 1920s glam into their collections. Simply look for silhouettes with a dropped waist, sequined backs, and draped cap sleeves. When it comes to your headpiece, keep it simple but elegant. If a veil is not your thing, try a draped pearl headband, a feathered fascinator, or a glitzy diamante hair headband instead.

Look for beaded gowns in geometric patterns, sequin garments, or even feathers and fringe when shopping for bridal party dresses. Any of these details will lend a glamorous 1920s vibe to your bridesmaids! Your groom and groomsmen will have plenty of options whether your wedding is black-tie formal or daytime chic. Stick to classic tuxedos for formal occasions. If you're going to an outdoor venue in the summer, wear a vest, shirt, and bow tie.

Indulge in Delicious Dishes

Mr Jay Gatsby had it all and gave his guests a five-star experience from start to finish when he threw a party. And we can only presume you feel the same way. Remember to keep the refreshments flowing from the start of the cocktail hour until the end of the reception. Gatsby would not let his friends go hungry and thirsty, nor should you.

At Highfield, we serve approachable fine dining, making everyone feel welcome regardless of their taste. We call it Great British Dining because we celebrate classic British cuisine in our fabulously luxurious entertaining rooms, The DrawMe Room, The Great Hall, and The Think Pink Parlour.
