Alternative Twists on Wedding Traditions

At HIGHFIELD, our Driffield hotel has the capacity to hold various weddings of different sizes and themes. We want your big day to be remembered years afterwards. But, when it comes to certain wedding traditions, many couples might be put off due to outdated connotations.

This does not mean that these wedding traditions have to be completely scrapped, however. Just brought to the 21st century. Find out unique and alternative twists on traditional wedding tropes and how HIGHFIELD can transform your wedding style. Why settle for the traditional wedding rules? Make it your own with our alternative wedding venue that’s like no other!

Guest Book

In the past, visitors at weddings would write a greeting to the happy couple and sign their names in a blank-paged book. The bride and groom would reread the book after the wedding and then place it on their bookshelf to be forgotten.

With "book" being a symbolic phrase, couples have become considerably more inventive instead of these wedding traditions. Why not consider cork boards? Where guests can pin their most treasured moments onto for the couple to look back on. Or providing a polaroid or disposable cameras for images instead of messages. After you have made your mark, make sure to get yourself personalised and custom cocktails in our Pink Parlour or Library Bar.

Bouquet Toss

In today’s society, the act of a wedding bouquet toss is now looked down on. Traditionally, whoever caught the bouquet would be next to be wed. Yet, this was only the women. What if single women do not wish to be married? Or, believe that these wedding traditions are embarrassing for them? So, for couples concerned with this wedding tradition, alternative twists should be considered.

There are so many possibilities for this. If the bride is wanting to still throw a bouquet, why not instead throw loose flowers for those who want to participate to catch and not feel left out? Or better still, not throwing a bouquet and instead honouring these women with personal notes or an individual flower. Bouquets could instead also be presented to parents or an honoured guest. At HIGHFIELD, no matter your choice, we have rooms that are ideal for catching those precious moments.

Wedding Veil

This is one of the more weird wedding traditions. Brides wearing a wedding veil over their faces originally came from ancient Rome, where they were to protect the bride from “evil spirits”.

For alternative couples, this might be an appealing wedding tradition. Especially if they believe in the supernatural. But, for others, maybe just leave this one back in Rome.

Wedding Transportation

Whether your preference, the couple has to exit in style. At HIGHFIELD, our Yorkshire hotel has over 7 acres of gorgeous woodlands. Based in East Yorkshire, your wedding vehicle has miles of country roads to explore before or after the ceremony.
