The grounds of Victorian Grade II listed Highfield Hotel comprise 7 acres of lawns, herbaceous borders and beds hidden within mature mixed deciduous and coniferous woodland. Established from the 1860's the woodland contains many fine specimens of Beech, Horse Chestnut, Yew & Pine trees. Wood-chip paths pass through drifts of Wild garlic, Bluebells and Snakeshead fritillaries throughout spring and follow the flanks of Driffield Beck, a seasonal spring fed tributary of the most northerly chalk trout stream in the UK; featuring pools, weirs, home to the occasional Brown trout. As well as a number of original features including a restored tennis court, rockery and fernery, the current owners have begun a collection of 'living fossil' trees including Wollemia nobilis, Ginkgo biloba and Araucaria species; added two mini orchards; erected a stunning Victorian style Glass House, set within a kitchen garden and housing collections of unusual Succulents, Tillandsias and Carnivorous plants. The House frontage is clothed in an assortment of climbers including impressive Wisteria, fig, grape and Passion flower, and sits upon a terrace fringed with herbaceous borders. Light refreshments available.
